What Is Jealousy? Jealousy Is Self-Hypnosis

In this series of articles, I'm exploring how negative emotions actually have their roots in positive intentions.

Jealousy can be all consuming and lead to a bitter existence, it can hold you back from your own achievements and ruin relationships. Jealousy can feel like a very negative emotion, but it means well. What if jealousy is just a message from you to you about something that someone else has that you want? You want something or feel that you deserve something that someone else has then this is actually a positive reaction to yourself.

If you let yourself become the jealous emotion though things can get out of hand. You become fixated on the fact that you should have what they have, and your attention narrows on what you don't have. This can create embittered feelings towards the person who has what you do not so that you start to blame them and the negative spiral intensifies. You become hypnotised by the message and enter a negative emotional trance. Once in an emotional trance you stop thinking critically. You become the emotion.

If you simply experience the jealous feeling as a message though, you maintain your capacity to think critically and are not hypnotised by it. You acknowledge that you deserve something that you don't have and go about doing what you can do to achieve it while remaining mindful of what you do have.

If you are experiencing an excess of any unwanted negative emotion then you are experiencing a form of self-hypnosis. I help people 'wake up' from these states all the time by using hypnosis to help them see through the illusion of their own thinking.
