Worthing Hypnotist Asks How Does Hypnosis Work For Fear And Anxiety?

If something scares you to the extent that it has a debilitating effect on your life then you can probably bring on some level of the fear reaction just by thinking about it in a safe place such as your living room. That experience may be a churning gut, sweaty palms, faster heart rate or a full on a panic attack...just by thinking about it.

Even when you are in a less safe environment, maybe you are facing down that fear, and these symptoms come on – they are not reacting to the trigger, they are reacting to what you believe is the worst case scenario playing at some level in your mind as if it is actually happening. Possibly, with some people, they are not even reacting to the trigger any more they are just scared of feeling scared and so the fear experience comes on anyway.

In order to answer the question 'how does hypnosis work for fear and anxiety?' you must first understand fear and anxiety. Fear and anxiety are pure imagination. You can bring the feelings on just by thinking about certain triggers that bring those feelings on. It is not real. It is something that you are doing, a process that is running in your mind.

Over time you have quite possibly learnt some coping mechanisms that allow you to live with it – from always finding a way to avoid putting yourself in certain situations to forcing yourself through it with a heavily suppressed feeling of fear trying to take hold of you throughout the experience. You may have tried counselling which can be very effective, but hard work. These techniques are using your rational mind to deal with an imaginary problem. Anxiety is not rational. Fear cannot be reasoned with.

If fear and anxiety is created in the right brain, it is best to use a right brain solution.

So how does hypnosis work for fear and anxiety? Hypnosis is pure imagination. Hypnosis is the process by which the hypnotist brings your imagination forwards so that it is dominant over the rational mind and then suspends disbelief in the idea that what you are doing is real (think about that one!) so that what you are doing is as real as lifting your hand and scratching an itch.

In the treatment of anxiety, hypnosis uses right brain thinking to solve a right brain problem. It uses imagination to change your uncomfortable imaginings. Hypnosis fights fire with fire. That is why hypnosis works for fear and anxiety and is often very fast and very effective.

I am a Worthing hypnotist and I specialise in changing fear and anxiety patterns for clients in Worthing and West Sussex, but this applies for all emotional problems that may be holding you back in life. Emotion is not rational.

If you are reading this and thinking 'ah, but can I be hypnotised?' you are asking a good question. If you come and see me for hypnosis in Worthing, I will do some simple hypnotic experiments to check that you respond well to hypnosis to check that you can be hypnotised as the majority an be but not everyone unfortunately. This ensures that if you decide to invest in a full session or two you have the best chances of it being effective.
