Five Ways How Hypnosis Can Help For Trauma Recovery
Many anxiety symptoms can be due to past trauma. It is as if there is a part of the mind reacting to that emotion as if the trigger is in the current day instead of a year ago, 10 years ago or all the way back to childhood.
In these situations it is my job to detach my clients from the events that caused this unresolved emotion in order to free them from it and therefore resolving the emotion. The five most common ways how hypnosis can help for trauma recovery to do this are:
Rescue It
I work with the assumption that everything that I do with the subconscious is metaphor and one metaphor is that there is a part of the mind trapped in the memory. Being trapped in the memory means they are responding to the events of the memory as if they are happening now. In which case I ask the subconscious to rescue the part of the mind from the memory and bring it into the current day where my client has survived and feels safe.
Guide It Out
Alternatively I might speak to the part of the mind that is trapped in the memory and guide it out of the memory to the current day where it is safe to be.
Alter The Submodalities Of The Memory
If the client can recall the memory very easily then I will ask them to do so and then ask them to step out of it and put it on a screen, freeze it into a photograph, turn it into black and white, turn down the sound and then just let it go so that it drifts into the past, further and further away.
Remove It From Their Head
Sometimes people can identify a specific place in their head where they store the memory If this is the case I can often move it to a different place in their head which often changes their relationship to it or pull it out of their head completely.
Effect Bridge
Similar to altering the submodalities, we use the emotion they are experiencing to lead us back tot he very first time they experienced it. When we get there, I ask them to float up out of the memory so they are looking down on it from above from a perspective where they have survived the event, looking at the event from an adult point of view if they experienced it first as a child, to acknowledge that they did the best that they could with the resources they had at the time. This often enables their mind to reconstruct the memory and then we come back to the present day visiting each related event along the way to prove that the emotion has been resolved.
