What The Matrix Tells Us About The Mind

Find out just how deep the rabbit hole goes

As a metaphor for the subconscious and conscious mind, there is not much better than The Matrix.

Neo starts the story living in The Matrix, but knows there is something more. It is easy for us in life to live within our subconscious routines without really thinking about the world and our place in it. We know something is out there, but there is no need explore it because we are comfortable where we are, in The Village.

Neo woke up to the outside world though and left his comfort zone. In the film, Morpheus uses the Rabbit Hole analogy of Alice in Wonderland which is ironic because, when Alice falls down the Rabbit Hole, it’s all about going down into the subconscious, but when Neo explores ‘how deep the Rabbit Hold goes’ he is taken into the conscious world so his subconscious world.

When he wakes up in ‘the world of the real’, he wakes up to the conscious world and he realises that to meet the challenges there, he must make changes in the subconscious world and in order to make those changes he develops powers – when he is in his subconscious, there are no rules. When I hypnotise you, there are no rules, no limitations, you can do whatever you need to do to meet the challenges of your conscious world.

There are threshold guardians too – there are sentinels in the conscious world and agents and rogue programs in the subconscious world. These are metaphors for the feelings and beliefs that keep you contained in the safety of your subconscious routines. A good hypnotist can get you past those guardians though, allowing you to use the power of your subconscious mind to defeat these guardians, defeat the feelings stopping you from achieving what you want to achieve and in doing so improve your conscious world freeing you from your anxieties…or the machines!

Ever wonder how Neo was able to stop the machines in the real world? When you take the risks and come out of your comfort zone, when you leave The Village, and meet the challenges of your conscious world, you awake the powers within, and soon those powers rise from your subconscious into your conscious mind and you can do things you couldn’t do before.
