In this story Alex the Hypnotist meets a guy called Keith who is holed up in a department store. He is as terrified of the world as he was before the apocalypse. When Alex meets him he seems to have a very acute Social Anxiety Disorder and is unable to actually speak to him at first so has to communicate in writing.
Hypnosis in West Sussex and the real world is no different to what you read in this story. The techniques used on the fictional character are based on techniques that I have or would use in a real session.
In the story, Alex hypnotises Keith using an hypnotic induction that has become known as Thain’s wrist lift. It is a very simple and effective induction that quickly answers the question ‘Can I be hypnotised?‘ as without you having to do much it leaves most people’s hand suspended in mid-air without them actually holding it there. From there the hypnotist could get it to move anywhere he wants to deepen the trance state and prove to the hypnotee’s conscious mind that something strange is going on.
The actual change work in this story is based on Keith’s love of swords and sorcery fiction and is based on my Village Metaphor on this site. It is important to present the new ideas that I want the subconscious to take on in a way that it will identify with which is why I always ask about passions and entertainment at the beginning of a session. Then all I need to do is apply the new ideas as part of that metaphor and tie that to my client’s future life experiences. In this situation Alex is using a sorcery metaphor to change the relationship between the emotional forces protecting Keith and the emotional forces that want more for him. A change of that relationship can really change your life and quite often it is at the core of most issues that seem out of your control.
