Don’t turn back!

At the beginning of Harry Potter, Harry’s world is the Muggle world and when he comes of age he receives his call to adventure in the form of a letter from Hogwarts. This is a big step out of The Village he’s come accustomed to. Thinking about this in terms of Social Anxiety, the comfort zone that you are comfortable in is your version of the Muggle world. It’s what you know, it is familiar, you might not be happy there but you can’t seem to leave.

Harry faces several barriers that keep him contained in his ‘Village’, keep him from crossing into the magic world. The Dursley’s house is a barrier, it contains him, traps him. The other big one is, he needs magic to cross the threshold. These barriers are thresholds, they divide the two worlds and can be very difficult to cross. With social anxiety the thresholds are the actions that you musty take to get out of your comfort zone – it might be going to a party or speaking your mind or eating a meal in a public location.

Then there’s the threshold guardians: in Harry Potter one is in the form of Mr Dursley who takes action to keep Harry from leaving the Muggle world, keeping him from crossing the threshold at all. Then there are the threats within the magic world, there is Draco, Snape, Death Eaters, a whomping willow, Voldemort, to name but a few. All are there to give Harry the opportunity to run back to The Village, where everything is safe and familiar, even though he was not happy. With Social Anxiety these threshold guardians are the feelings you get if you do take a risk and as you probably know, they range from nausea, sweats, blushing, stammering, to name but a few. These things seem threatening as do the threats in Harry’s world, but they all part of you, they are there to protect you, to keep you in The Village where you are safe.

We can bring you face to face with your threshold guardians and turn the magic power on them so you can move past them, freeing yourself to explore the magic of the social world and meet your destiny, your full potential. These changes can be made – stop being imprisoned by the label of social anxiety and come and change the metaphor.
