The Goonies film posterMikey Walsh’s home town is about to be sold to developers unless the community can raise the funds to stop it. This is a classic start to any hero’s journey because it is a common occurrence in your life – external events occur and threaten the equilibrium that you build around yourself, threaten The Village, so you are forced to leave The Village to find what you need to make the necessary personal changes to meet that threat.

Everyone else in the town has accepted defeat but not Mikey because the ego, the hero, has no choice – the ego prevails in one form or another, but has to change in order to do so. To change he has to leave The Village. Aided by his subconscious in the form of a treasure map, he slips over the threshold of the world that he knows and goes underground to find the treasure. When facing change in your life, this is the moment that you cross into unfamiliar territories and therefore rely on your subconscious to get you through because your conscious has not previous experience to draw upon.

Mikey’s threshold is guarded by the Fratelli family. When you are faced with the decision to cross this threshold, there are guards to make you think carefully – thoughts and feelings that encourage you to stay in The Village where all is safe. You have the power to push past these guardians, but they will pursue you until you succeed or turn back as do the Fratellis in The Goonies. With Social Anxiety and other fears these guardians can rule your life.

At the end, Mikey finds One Eyed Willy’s treasure which is enough to save the town – Equilibrium is restored and security is back in The Village, but Mikey will never be quite the same again. If you persevere when circumstances require you to change your life in some way, push past the feelings of insecurity as there is treasure on the other side of them, treasure that will improve your life experience, treasure that you will never find if you stay in The Village.

If you need to leave The Village but, Hypnosis will provide you that map, prepare you to deal with the guardians and lead you to the treasure.
